Does Your Classic Car Need an MOT?
In the UK, vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago are generally exempt from the annual MOT test, provided no “substantial changes” have been made to the chassis, body, axles, steering, or engine (among other components). This is sometimes called the “historic vehicle” MOT exemption. However, exemption isn’t automatic — you may need to declare your vehicle as exempt when you renew your vehicle tax, and the legal responsibility to keep the car roadworthy still applies at all times, MOT or not.
If your classic car doesn’t yet qualify for the exemption, or you’d simply prefer the peace of mind of an annual test, it will need a standard MOT like any other vehicle.
What Gets Checked on an Older Vehicle
Whether your car is being tested or you’re just having it serviced, the areas that tend to need the closest attention on classic cars are braking systems, tyres and their condition and age, steering and suspension components, lighting, and corrosion around structural points. Older cars can also have wear in areas that simply aren’t a factor on a modern vehicle, such as original wiring, fuel lines, and exhaust systems — all worth having checked by someone who knows classic cars specifically, rather than a generic modern-vehicle workshop.
