Campervans Need A Specialist’s Eye

A 50-year-old camper isn’t tested like a modern hatchback. Rust hides behind seams and under floor coverings, air-cooled engines behave differently, and period brakes and steering have their own quirks. We’ve sold, serviced and customised VW campers, so we know where to look and we’ll tell you straight what’s urgent and what can wait.

What We Check Closely On A VW Camper

  • Structure & corrosionSills, floor pans, outriggers, jacking points and the front valance, where campers most often rust.
  • BrakesDrum and disc condition, flexible hoses, handbrake and brake balance.
  • Steering & suspensionSteering box play, track rod ends, king pins or ball joints, and dampers.
  • Engine & exhaustOil leaks, heat exchangers, exhaust security and emissions.
  • Lights & electricsHeadlamp aim, indicators and the wiring faults older campers are known for.
  • Conversion fittingsSeat belts and seat mountings, plus anything added during a conversion.

Failed elsewhere or not sure it will pass? Ask for a pre-MOT check and we’ll show you what needs attention before the test.

Is your vehicle MOT-exempt? Most vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago can be declared a Vehicle of Historic Interest and don’t legally need an MOT, unless they’ve been substantially changed. It must still be roadworthy, though, and many owners choose a voluntary MOT each year for peace of mind. We’re happy to test exempt vehicles too.
