1979 Volvo 264 GLE V6 Automatic – Rare Blue, Low Mileage

Low Miles

Just arrived at GCCG: a 1979 Volvo 264 GLE in a striking shade of blue, with low mileage and low ownership from new.

The 264 was Volvo’s flagship saloon of the late 1970s – the car that replaced the 164 and brought Volvo’s first V6, the 2.7-litre “PRV” engine developed with Peugeot and Renault. The GLE was the top-of-the-range model, and this one has the smooth automatic gearbox that suits the V6 perfectly. Around 132,000 264s were built worldwide, but very few survive in the UK. Official DVLA figures for early 2026 show just 23 264 GLE automatics left in the country – and only 9 of them taxed and on the road. In 1999 there were 238 on the road, so roughly 96% have disappeared. Across every version of the 264, only 16 are on UK roads today, making this one of the rarest Volvos you can buy.

It presents beautifully, with straight panels, original steel wheels with Volvo centre caps, and the distinctive 1979-on GLE front end with its square headlamps and chrome grille.

At over 40 years old, it’s eligible for the historic vehicle tax class, which means no road tax, no MOT requirement and no London ULEZ charge.

As with every car at GCCG, it’s been hand-picked for its condition, history and character. Viewings welcome by appointment at our Fortis Green showroom – call 0208 129 4440 or WhatsApp us.
